Cape Verde fought to the end at the Boxing Pre-Olympic Bangkok 2024 and won a place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with David de Pina in the men's 51kg category. The event, which ends this Sunday (June 2), distributed the last boxing places for the Paris Olympics.
De Pina defeated Mahdi Parvizi, from the Islamic Republic of Iran, by unanimous decision of the judges (5-0). The boxer, who arrived in Bangkok thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign to cover training costs, food and travel expenses, proved this morning that the effort was worth it.
It is worth noting that the participation of athletes in the Paris Games depends on selection by their National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Each NOC has exclusive authority over the representation of its respective country at the Olympic Games.
In each category, the tournament ends as soon as the Olympic quotas are defined. Depending on the weight, there may not be a need to hold the final or even the semi-finals.
Cape Verde also had Bruno Fernandes as a representative at the Bangkok Pre-Olympic, but the athlete was eliminated in the preliminary stages. Ivanusa Moreira, also known as Nancy, reached the quarterfinals.
